Buildings near the sea experience higher and more variable humidity, and timber responds by moving more than it would inland. A floor laid without adequate expansion allowance will gap in one season and tighten in another.
We take moisture and humidity readings at survey, set expansion gaps according to species, board width and the building environment, and advise on ventilation where a hall swings widely between heating seasons.
Seal systems cure differently in persistently humid conditions, and a product that performs perfectly in a dry inland building can fail early on the coast.
We select systems suited to the actual environment and allow realistic curing times rather than manufacturer minimums. It occasionally extends a programme by a day and it substantially extends the life of the finish.
Coastal facilities deal with sand and salt carried in on footwear, both of which are abrasive and corrosive in ways ordinary dirt is not. Entrance zones bear almost all of it.
Matting, barrier zones and an appropriate cleaning routine address the cause; specifying a harder-wearing finish addresses the consequence. We advise on both, and prioritise entrance areas during slip testing.
The gymnasium at The Bradfield Club had served generations and its floor wore every year of it. We sanded the original timber back to life, made the repairs it needed, then resealed and re-marked the space.
Community facilities work to tight budgets and cannot lose their halls for long, so the programme was planned accordingly and finished on the date agreed.

An indicative price for a Pembrokeshire hall can be given from a few things sent by email, which saves a long journey before either side knows whether the work fits. Send the approximate length and width of the hall, or a plan if you have one, and the age of the floor if known.
Add half a dozen photographs taken in daylight: the whole hall from a doorway, a close up of the worst wear, any damage, the perimeter where the floor meets the wall and the existing markings.
Tell us what the hall is used for, when it could be closed and whether other halls in the county are considering work at the same time. From that we give a realistic figure and then survey in person before anything is fixed.
A council, trust or college with more than one hall benefits from treating them as an estate. We inspect every floor in one round, grade each on condition, remaining board depth and the state of the seal, and produce a single report that puts them in order of need.
That gives an estates manager a programme for the next few years: which halls need a full refinish now, which can wait on a recoat and which only need cleaning and a change of routine. Budget figures sit against each item.
In a county as spread out as Pembrokeshire the saving in travel alone is significant, because a team working three halls in one trip costs far less than three separate visits, and every hall gets a fixed date in the same programme.
Because we survey, repair, sand, seal and mark with our own team, one guarantee covers the whole floor. There is no argument between a fitter and a coating supplier about whose fault a failure is, because both are us, and you have one number to call.
We stand behind adhesion of the seal, the integrity of any repair and the accuracy of the markings. If a coat lifts, peels or clouds through a fault in the preparation or application, we return and put it right at our cost. The period and terms are stated in the quotation.
What a guarantee cannot cover is damage from furniture, water ingress, polish applied by a cleaning contractor or a floor left unheated in a damp Pembrokeshire winter, and we say so plainly so there is no misunderstanding later.
A sealed sports floor takes sport well and furniture badly. Exam desks, stacked chairs, trestle tables and staging all leave the scoring and dents we are later asked to sand out, and much of it is avoidable.
A purpose made protective covering laid over the playing area before the desks arrive takes that punishment instead. It rolls out in an hour, lifts just as quickly and stores rolled on a rack between uses. Sheets should be taped at the joints and never dragged across the seal.
For a school hall that hosts exams twice a year, or a community hall in Pembrokeshire that runs markets, dinners and shows, the covering pays for itself the first time it prevents a repair. We advise on the right type for your surface and on how to store it.
Pembrokeshire work reaches us mainly from school sports halls, community leisure facilities and a large number of village and church halls.
Because the county is a long way from most suppliers, we plan this work as continuous blocks and bring everything we need with us: machinery, abrasives, coatings and spares. Nothing can be collected in the afternoon, so the job has to be thought through completely before we set off. That makes remote projects more tightly planned than local ones rather than less.
School halls are the largest group, and in many communities the school hall is the principal indoor sports space for the surrounding area, taking club training and community lettings alongside curriculum use.
Village and church halls follow, and there are a great many. Those timber floors usually have plenty of depth left under the polish, and restoration transforms them for a modest sum.
Where several facilities in the region are considering work, sequencing them into one trip makes a genuine difference to cost for everybody involved.

For school halls that serve as the community sports facility, De Wint School is the closest comparison. Curriculum sport, club training and evening lettings on one floor, a seal worn through where the traffic runs, and a fixed term date at the end of it. The floor was taken back to bare timber, damaged boards replaced, and markings set out fresh from measured dimensions with redundant sports removed while the floor was open.
For village and church halls, St Katherine Hall is the better parallel: an old timber floor under decades of polish with chair and table scoring across the whole area, restored rather than replaced.
Both make the point about remote work. We plan these as continuous blocks with everything brought with us, which makes the programme tighter and the dates more reliable, and sequencing several halls into one trip brings the cost down for all of them.
Yes. The report records the floor type and construction, moisture readings, remaining board depth, the condition of the seal and any structural faults, with photographs, and sets out the options with a fixed price against each. It is yours to keep whether or not you go ahead.
Modern point elastic sports vinyl meets the same European standard as timber and is used for competitive badminton, volleyball and handball at a high level. It gives less ball bounce for basketball and cannot be refinished, so for a hall where basketball leads we usually favour timber.
On timber, yes, completely. A full sand takes the old paint off with the worn seal and the court is set out fresh. On vinyl or polyurethane the old lines are over coated in the floor colour before new marking. Removing redundant courts is the cheapest improvement most halls can make.
Yes. We scale your artwork to the circle or area, paint it between coats of seal so the finish protects it and match the colours to your branding. Done during a refinish it costs little extra, and it wears at the same rate as the floor around it.
None of it. Our own employed team carries out every stage with our own machinery, which is why we can plan a remote job as one continuous block and why a single company is responsible for the result.
Not when the two are designed together. The slab must be dried and the heating commissioned before laying, the surface temperature kept within the manufacturer limit and the room warmed gradually each season. We take readings and advise on the control settings.
A two pack polyurethane in a satin sheen for almost every hall. It is the hardest wearing option for timber, gives consistent grip, resists furniture better than single pack products and does not glare under LED lighting. Other systems are used where a floor or budget calls for them.
A screen and recoat every two to three years keeps the seal intact, and a full sand is needed roughly every ten years. Heavily used leisure halls sit at the shorter end, quiet village halls at the longer. The interval depends on use and on how the floor is cleaned.
