Choosing Between Timber And Synthetic Surfaces

There is no universally best sports floor, only the right one for how a building is actually used. Timber gives the truest ball response and the most natural feel, and uniquely can be sanded and resealed across decades. Vinyl, polyurethane and lino resist the furniture damage that dominates multi-use halls and need far less upkeep.

If your hall hosts exams, dining and events as well as sport, chairs and trolleys will do more damage than any amount of badminton, and a synthetic surface will often cost less to own across its life. We fit both, so the recommendation follows your timetable rather than a product range.

Moisture: The Commonest Cause Of Failure

More sports floors are destroyed by water than by wear. Older concrete slabs and converted buildings frequently lack an effective damp barrier, and vapour rising from below will lift, cup and rot a timber floor laid over it.

Every survey we carry out includes moisture readings in and beneath the floor. Where they demand a barrier we specify one and explain why; where they do not, we leave it out rather than adding cost. Either way the readings are yours in writing, which is worth having on file whoever does the work.

Applying Seal After Sanding
Modified Expoxy Coating For Granwood Sports Floor Ascot

Granwood And Composite Block Floors

Halls built between the 1950s and 1980s were frequently finished with Granwood, compressed wood-composite blocks laid in a brick-like pattern. They are tough and long-lived, and they are destroyed by anyone who treats them like timber and puts a sanding machine through them.

Granwood holds almost no surface material. The correct route is careful preparation followed by a specialist modified epoxy coating system, which restores an even surface with the colour back in it for a fraction of replacement cost. Send a photograph and we will identify your floor free of charge.

Case Study: Liskeard Leisure Centre

The main sports hall at Liskeard Leisure Centre had taken years of public sessions, club blocks and league nights. We delivered a complete programme of sanding, re-lining and resealing, returning the hall to service looking like a new installation.

It is a fair illustration of how we handle leisure work: one tight programme, agreed dates, and a centre back in action on schedule.

FAQS

Three things drive the figure: hall size, the amount of preparation the existing surface needs, and whether the sub-floor requires attention. All three are established at survey, after which the quotation is fixed. We do not price from a distance and then revise once work starts.

We cover the entire area and beyond. Our projects have taken us across the UK and internationally, and the planning method is the same wherever the building happens to be.

Solid and engineered timber from Junckers, Boen and Havwoods, plus vinyl, polyurethane and lino, and specialist coating systems for Granwood and composite block floors. Being multi-brand means our recommendation follows your building rather than a product range.

None of it. The team that surveys the hall carries out every stage through to the final coat and returns for maintenance. It means one warranty covering the whole system and one point of contact throughout.

Yes. Overnight shifts, weekend blocks, phased sections and school holiday programmes are all standard for us. We agree exactly which sessions are affected before anything is booked out, and the reopening date is fixed in writing.
