Slip Resistance Testing For Indoor Sports Halls & Courts

Slip resistance testing for sports floors is the method used to measure the traction of an indoor sports surface. Usually this will be carried out on a sports hall floor to ensure that it is safe for sporting use. Since adults or children will be using sports areas for high-activity games where running and jumping will be involved, it is essential that the floor has the correct level of traction. This will keep everyone using the area safe, minimising the risk of injury.

The Pendulum Slip Resistance Test (BS7976) is a procedure that is recognised by Health and Safety Executives (HSE) and should be carried out annually. Our team can offer this test to you as part of your installation or refurbishment with us or for an existing floor.

Why You Should You Test Your Floors For Slip Resistance?

You have a legal responsibility to have your floors tested annually as part of an ongoing risk assessment. This will not only ensure that you are covered legally should an incident occur, but it also ensures the safety of the people using the courts.

Other important factors include:

Pendulum Slip Resistance Tests

Here at Courtship, we offer the Pendulum Slip Resistance Test as part of ongoing maintenance, a new installation with us or as part of a refurbishment. This test is widely recognised by HSE and also the law. We have carried out these tests successfully for our clients throughout the UK and internationally.

What Is Involved In A Slip Resistance Test?

The test works by the use of an operating swinging arm that brushes over the floors surface. A rubber slider is used at a set distance to sweep over the floor, the arm will slow down while passing over the floor due to the traction or friction that is present. This friction is then measured using a an attached pointer. The slider can be adjusted to imitate different shoes, including trainers and even barefoot – meaning the floor can be assessed for different sports and activities.

The higher the number, the lower the risk of slipping. In order for your floor to pass by HSE standards, your floor needs to fall into the ‘Low’ category.

A Pendulum Test Value (PVT) is calculated by:

High – 0-24
Moderate: 25-35
Low: 36+

Your Legal Responsibility

In the event of a slip-related injury that has taken place, legal action may be taken against you. If you have not followed the necessary health and safety risk assessments or carried out testing for your sports floor, you could be fined. If you have carried out slip resistance testing and an injury still occurs, you will be covered, avoiding legal action.

All of our sports floors are supplied by leading manufacturers and meet the necessary UK standards of slip resistance. The pendulum test is portable, meaning that all flooring prior to installation can be tested for optimum slip resistance. We will then carry out any necessary testing for your current floor or refurbished floor.
