Over time, sports hall floors can become damaged and faded over years of use. When this happens, it is time to consider gym floor refurbishment. It is important to maintain the flooring to ensure the safety of its users and keep up with relevant sporting regulations. Many schools and leisure centres will require floor maintenance and opting for refurbishment over replacement is a less costly option when operating under a budget. But what types of gym floors can be refurbished and how is it done?

What types of sports hall flooring can be refurbished?

Many different types of sports hall flooring can be refurbished after years of use. The process of gym floor refurbishment varies depending on the type of flooring, however, all floors can be maintained.

Wooden Sports Flooring

This is the most common type of sports hall flooring, frequently used in multipurpose halls in schools. Hardwood flooring is a very durable option, with options for customisation through different types of wood and finishes. Gym flooring is commonly installed with maple or beech wooden flooring.

Lino Sports Flooring

Lino is also used as gym flooring, as it allows for multifunctionality. This is an organic-based option, made using cork. Cork is a renewable material, making it a more eco-friendly option. It is fully customisable with different colours and textures, as well as extremely durable. This means it is a long-lasting option, requiring little maintenance or refurbishment.

Vinyl Sports Flooring

Again, vinyl flooring is commonly used in gyms. It is a true synthetic material, making it durable and easily maintained. It is great for multifunctional rooms, as well as for specific sports such as tennis and volleyball.

When should gym floor refurbishment take place?

Gym floor refurbishment will be necessary after years of consistent use. There are a few signs of wear to look out for that could suggest your sports hall flooring needs maintenance:

The lines are faded. One of the most obvious signs that a sports hall floor requires restoration is if the lines are fading. These lines need to be clear to stay up to date with sporting regulations, as well as to improve the efficiency and ease of the game being played. Gyms don’t generally have floor markings, so it may not be possible to detect a worn floor using this method.

The floor is losing friction. Over time, sports hall flooring experiences wear and tear that affects its friction level. It’s important that the friction level remains at a safe level to avoid injury.

The flooring needs to be updated. There may not be a specific functional reason for a floor refurbishment. It may be that the floor needs to be updated to suit a specific sport, e.g. new lines or a different texture. You may want to update the overall aesthetic of the floor, customising the stain of wood, for instance.

How does gym floor refurbishment take place?

The way sports hall flooring is restored depends on the type of flooring and how damaged the flooring is. There is a different process for each material:

Wooden Sports Flooring

Wooden flooring can become dull and damaged over time, especially when used for sports with rapid foot movement. The benefit of wooden flooring is that it can be restored time and again through a sanding process. The timer can be completely stripped back to remove any imperfections. Once the floor is sanded, it can be primed and any sports markings can be reapplied, producing a brand new surface.

Lino Sports Flooring

Lino flooring is incredibly durable, however, there are ways to bring it back to its former glory if it becomes worn. We can complete a deep clean, abrade, re-line and lacquer to create an improved appearance. This will not produce a completely new surface, lino will need to be completely replaced to achieve this.

Vinyl Sports Flooring

Vinyl flooring can easily be refurbished by using elastic lacquers to overcoat the existing flooring. Like sanding, this will create a completely new surface. As well as this, it is an opportunity to customise the floor with a new colour, finish and floor markings.

Lacquers and modified PU (polyurethane) coatings can also be applied to wooden floorings to create a specific friction level or customise the appearance.

How can gym flooring be maintained?

Sports hall flooring should be regularly cleaned to maintain its surface and avoid any damage caused by grit or dirt. The floor will become damaged over time, however, regular cleaning will slow down the process of degradation. It is wise to keep an eye on the state of the flooring to understand when repair or restoration needs to take place. If you require sports hall flooring installation, refurbishment or maintenance services, Courtship Flooring is here to help.
