Courtship Flooring is a commercial sports flooring contractor working in Sheffield and across the UK. A significant share of our work involves facilities hosting competition, where measurable performance and documented compliance matter as much as appearance.

Indoor sports surfaces are assessed on four measurable properties: shock absorption, vertical deformation, ball behaviour and friction. BS EN 14904 defines how each is tested and what an indoor sports floor should achieve.
Those properties pull against one another, which is what makes specification a craft. A floor optimised purely for shock absorption feels dead under a ball; one optimised purely for bounce punishes joints. We build to the standard and explain the trade-offs in plain English rather than product language.
A floor that performs well in the middle and poorly at one end is a failed floor, however good the average figure looks. Inconsistency almost always originates beneath the surface: a resilient layer that has compressed, a batten that has lost contact, or a sub-floor that has moved.
We assess across the whole area rather than sampling conveniently, and repair the build-up beneath before refinishing the surface above. Resurfacing over a structural problem simply hides it for a season.
Facilities hosting competition are periodically asked to evidence that their surface is fit for purpose, and an assurance is not evidence. We provide written documentation on completion, including pendulum slip resistance test reports to BS 7976-2 recording values across multiple positions.

Sanding makes dust. The question is whether it stays in the room or ends up through the building, and that is a matter of equipment and preparation rather than luck.
Our machines run on sealed vacuum extraction rather than bag systems, which captures the great majority of it at source. We screen the working area, and we agree with your site team which doors, vents and air handling routes need isolating before we start. In buildings with shared ventilation, particularly leisure centres with a pool hall, that conversation matters.
Edges and corners are the point at which dust escapes on a badly run job, because hand machines are harder to extract from. We use extracted edge equipment for the same reason we use it everywhere else.
The room we are working in will be dusty. The rest of the building should not be, and if it is then something has been done wrong. We would rather set the expectation clearly than have you discover it.
Every job is carried out by our own directly employed team using our own equipment. Nothing is passed to a chain of subcontractors, and that has practical consequences rather than being a slogan.
It means the people who survey your floor are connected to the people who work on it, so what was agreed is what happens. It means we control the programme rather than waiting on somebody else availability, which is why we can commit to a finish date and hold it. And it means the standard is consistent, because it is the same team on the last day as the first.
It also matters for the specialist work. Granwood restoration, parquet, sprung floor repairs and pendulum testing are not things you can subcontract to a general flooring firm and expect a good result. They are learned over years.
Courtship Flooring has been doing this since 1987, and a good deal of the team has been with the company for a very long time. That continuity is the reason we can look at a floor and know what is under it.
Timber remains the benchmark for indoor sports flooring, and the reason is simple: it performs well, it can be refinished repeatedly rather than replaced, and players prefer it.
The systems divide by what sits beneath the boards. A sprung floor uses resilient pads, foam blocks or engineered cradles under battens, producing an area elastic response that spreads load when a player lands. A semi sprung system uses a shallower build up. A floor fixed directly to the slab has no give at all and is hard on joints where sport is played regularly.
Above that, the playing surface is solid strip or engineered board. Maple is the traditional choice for its hardness and pale colour, with beech and oak also common. Solid strip has a generous wear layer and will take many refinishes. Engineered board has a thinner layer over a stable core, so there is less margin.
The detail that governs longevity is the perimeter. Timber moves with humidity, and a floor without a proper expansion gap and ventilated skirting will lift in the middle. It is skipped surprisingly often.
Not every sports floor is timber, and the synthetic surfaces have a genuine place rather than being a cheap alternative.
Point elastic vinyl systems deflect where they are loaded rather than across an area, which makes them forgiving underfoot and well suited to halls with a very mixed timetable. They need no refinishing, they clean easily, and they come in a range of colours that lets a hall be designed rather than simply floored. They have a finite life and are replaced rather than restored when it ends.
Linoleum is the older relation, still found in a great many school halls, and it can often be deep cleaned and resealed rather than replaced.
Polyurethane and modified epoxy systems are seamless, poured or applied as coatings, and are particularly useful over Granwood and cementitious substrates. They can be fully recoated in a new colour with fresh markings, which turns a tired hall into a refurbished one without touching what is underneath.

Sheffield gives us university sport, city leisure facilities and a substantial number of school and academy sports halls, across building stock spanning more than a century.
University and college facilities are busy year round, with summer conference and external hire filling what would otherwise be a shutdown. The working windows are narrow and fixed, and those projects are planned months ahead and staffed to complete inside them.
Academy and school halls are the largest group by number. We have completed work at Hornbury Academy in Wakefield nearby, and the pattern is consistent: a hall in constant curriculum use, a finish that had gone too long between refurbishments, and a fixed date to be back for term.
Leisure centres follow, where booking income means overnight working is usually the only practical route.
The older halls in the city frequently turn out to be Granwood, particularly in schools and church buildings. It needs a specialist approach rather than timber sanding, and most of what we are told is finished is nothing of the kind.
Hornbury Academy in Wakefield is the closest comparable project for most Sheffield school enquiries.
The hall was in constant curriculum use with community lettings on top, and the floor had gone considerably longer than it should have between refinishes. The seal had worn through where players actually run, dirt had begun working into open timber, and the markings had faded to the point where officiating was awkward.
We surveyed thoroughly first, which is what allowed a fixed price and a date that held. The floor was sanded back to bare timber, damaged boards were cut out and replaced with matching timber, and the hall was resealed with a two pack polyurethane. The markings were set out fresh from measured governing body dimensions rather than traced from the originals, and redundant sports came off while the floor was open at no extra cost.
For university facilities the closer comparison is Aston University, where the difficulty was a year round timetable rather than the floor itself.
The awkward part of relining is rarely the paint. It is finding a window when the hall can be empty and stay empty while the coatings cure.
A standalone reline of a multi sport hall takes two to three days including preparation, setting out, painting and the seal coat over the top. The floor has to be clear throughout, and nobody can walk on it while it cures. Foot traffic is normally possible around twenty four hours after the final coat, with full use including posts and equipment at seventy two.
Walking on a floor too early is the single most common reason a marking job needs touching up, and it is entirely avoidable. So we agree access arrangements before we start, sign the room and, where it helps, arrange for it to be locked.
For facilities that cannot give up three consecutive days, we can often split the hall and reline in halves, or work overnight so the courts are back by opening. We will price whichever routes are practical rather than telling you there is only one.
Considerably less than most people expect, because restoration rather than replacement is usually the answer. A full sand and seal typically costs a small fraction of a new floor. The survey is free, the quotation is fixed, and nothing is added later without your agreement.
The full area and the counties around it. Where a facility is some way from us, we bring all machinery and materials at the outset and complete everything within one agreed window.
