Performance floors carry a different responsibility from sports floors. Every landing sends force through ankles, knees and hips, and a properly engineered sprung construction absorbs a meaningful share of it before it reaches the performer.
The surface above matters just as much. Ballet and contemporary generally want a vinyl performance layer offering controlled slide; tap needs a harder, more responsive top; gymnastics needs consistent recovery across the whole area. We build and refurbish sprung studio floors tuned to the discipline rather than to a catalogue.
Distance changes logistics, not standards. Projects further from our base are planned as complete residencies: survey, repairs, sanding, sealing, marking and any testing completed inside one agreed window, with everything priced before we set off.
That approach means no partial jobs waiting on a return trip and no surprise costs appearing mid-programme. Neighbouring facilities booking together share the mobilisation, which brings the price down for all of them.
BS EN 14904 is the European standard for indoor sports surfaces, covering shock absorption, vertical deformation, ball behaviour, friction and durability. It is what a specifier, a governing body or an insurer will reference when asking whether a floor is fit for purpose.
We install and refurbish with the standard in mind and can arrange testing on completion, alongside pendulum slip testing to BS 7976-2, so you hold documented evidence rather than an assurance.
Not every floor we save sits in a sports centre. St Katherine’s had the kind of well-loved, well-worn hall floor that carries badminton one evening and a community event the next, and the committee wanted it rescued rather than replaced.
We restored it completely. The hall is now set for another few decades of everything it is asked to do.

The question we are asked most is when the floor can be used again, and the honest answer is that it depends on the system, which is why we put it in writing rather than giving a rule of thumb.
As a general guide, light foot traffic is possible around twenty four hours after the final coat. Full use, with equipment wheeled back and posts refitted, is usually seventy two hours. Some systems are faster and some are slower, and cold or humid conditions extend both.
Walking on a floor too early is the single most common cause of a job needing touching up, and it is entirely avoidable. Footprints in a curing seal do not polish out. Nor do the marks left by equipment put back a day early.
So we agree access arrangements before we start, we sign the room, and where necessary we arrange for it to be locked. It is not us being difficult. It is the difference between a floor that hands over properly and one that needs us back.
Netball is played on hard stops. The footwork rule means players land, plant and pivot rather than running through the ball, which puts a specific demand on the surface.
Grip has to be predictable. A player receiving in the goal circle needs to stop dead and trust the floor, and a surface polished smooth through the centre third is a genuine injury risk rather than an inconvenience.
A full court is 30.5 by 15.25 metres in three equal thirds, with a 0.9 metre centre circle and goal circles of 4.9 metre radius. Lines are 50 millimetres wide, and because the lines count as part of the area they enclose, marking them thin genuinely changes the game.
England Netball asks for 3.05 metres of run off for competitive play, which few school halls achieve. Where a hall cannot take a full court we mark a proportionally reduced court or lay out for a junior format, rather than marking something tight to the walls that is unsafe to play on.
Facilities managers are usually working to a figure set before anybody looked at the floor, so it helps to know what moves it.
Area is the obvious factor, and bigger halls are cheaper per square metre because mobilisation is spread further. A four court hall almost always works out better value per metre than a single studio.
Condition matters more than size. A screen and recoat is a fraction of the cost of a full sand. Board repairs, replacing damaged sections and dealing with a failed subfloor all add, and they are the items that appear once the old lacquer comes off.
Markings are priced by what you need rather than what is there. Removing three redundant sets makes the hall clearer and the job cheaper.
Access and hours are the last variable. A hall we can work in continuously through a holiday costs less than the same hall done overnight around evening bookings. We quote both where it helps you weigh disruption against money.
Every quotation follows a site visit, because a sports floor holds information you cannot get from a photograph and a price given without it is a price that will change.
We take moisture readings in the boards and, where there is any reason for doubt, in the slab beneath. Moisture from below is the single most common cause of a new finish failing early, and it is far cheaper to find before the work than afterwards.
We measure the remaining wear layer. Every full sand removes timber, and a floor that has been through several cycles may be close to its fixings. Knowing where you stand tells you whether this is a floor to refinish now or a floor to plan on replacing in a few years.
We lift a vent or an edge trim and look underneath. Dead spots, squeaks and movement almost always start below the boards, and no amount of work on the surface will touch them.
Then we record the finish, the markings and the condition of the perimeter. The survey takes about an hour and it decides everything that follows.
Glasgow gives us a broad mix, with university and college sport, a large council leisure estate and a substantial number of school sports halls.
University facilities are busy across the full year, with the summer filled by conferences and external hire rather than standing empty. The working windows are therefore narrow and fixed, and these projects are planned months ahead and staffed to finish inside them.
The leisure estate is the second strand and by volume a large one. Booking income makes long closures expensive, so most of that work happens overnight or across an agreed quiet period.
School and academy halls follow, many of them from the nineteen sixties and seventies with sprung timber floors that are structurally sound but overdue a refinish. Those are almost always better restored than replaced.
Granwood appears regularly in the older school and church halls here, and it is worth repeating that most Granwood described as beyond saving is not. It needs a specialist approach rather than timber sanding, and the difference in cost against replacement is substantial.
Glasgow enquiries often involve older halls, and the project most worth knowing about is St George School in Ascot.
That hall had a Granwood floor which more than one contractor had condemned as beyond saving. Granwood is a composite block of wood flour and cement laid in a bitumen bed, not timber, and sanded like timber it is permanently damaged. We assessed the blocks, rebedded the loose ones, replaced those that had broken up, prepared the surface with appropriate abrasives rather than aggressive sanding, and coated it with a modified epoxy system designed for composite substrates with the markings applied within the system.
The hall looks renewed and has years left in it, at a fraction of the cost of a replacement that would also have meant lifting a bitumen bed.
For university and leisure facilities the closer comparisons are Aston University and Medina Leisure Centre, both busy buildings with narrow fixed windows.
Relining is the natural moment to add the things that make a hall look like yours rather than institutional, because the setting out is being done anyway.
A school crest or club badge at centre court is one of the few changes that genuinely lifts a room for a modest cost. It is painted from your own artwork between coats of seal, so it sits under the final lacquer and wears at the same rate as the floor around it. Anything applied over a finished floor scuffs and peels within a season, whatever the supplier claims.
Colouring the key or a zone works the same way and has the same effect. A filled key in a contrasting colour makes a court read instantly and looks designed rather than accidental.
We scale the artwork properly to the circle or area it is going into and show you a layout before anything goes down, with colours matched to your own brand rather than approximated from a chart.
Size, condition and specification set the price. We survey free of charge, take moisture readings and measure remaining board depth, then quote a fixed sum with the scope itemised. If a cheaper approach will genuinely work, that is what we will recommend.

Surface marks and worn lacquer come out easily. Deep water staining and anything soaked into open timber may remain faintly visible, and we will tell you honestly at survey what to expect.
Yes, and it is routine. Split, damaged and water damaged boards are cut out and replaced with matching timber laid to the same grain direction, so the repair disappears once the floor is sanded.
Constantly. Summer holidays and half terms are when most of our school work happens, and summer slots book up early. If you are planning for next year it is worth speaking to us in January rather than June.
It depends on board thickness and how much has already been removed. A solid strip floor might take six to eight full sands across its life. We measure the remaining wear layer at survey.
A well maintained hall wants a light screen and recoat every two to three years and a full sand roughly every ten. Sticking to that keeps the boards alive far longer, because every full sand removes timber permanently.
